PRESIDENT

Jessica Landin, MHA

Jessica Landin has over 10 years of healthcare experience and is currently the Director of Operations at Evolent Health for WakeMed Key Community Care, an accountable care organization formed by WakeMed Health & Hospitals and Key Physicians. In this role, Jessica is business operations and population health management for the ACO.

Jessica came to Evolent from WakeMed, where she served in a regional affiliations role as the Strategic Services Manager focusing on strategic services, intra-hospital relations, group purchasing and cost reduction, quality and education for the Southern Atlantic Healthcare Alliance, of which WakeMed is a founding member.

Prior to WakeMed, Jessica was the Vice President of Marketing and the Vice President of the ASE Education and Research Foundation, overseeing marketing and physician relations, patient education and the education and research foundation. Early in her career, Jessica served in several healthcare, consumer product and education marketing and communications roles.

Jessica has an MHA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a BA in Journalism and Public Relations from UNC-Chapel Hill. She is an active member of ACHE/THEF.

Neil Kinard, MHA, FACHE, RHIA

Neil Kinard has been with Duke Medicine since April 2010. Prior to joining Duke University Health System’s Compliance Office, Neil performed revenue integrity analysis and coordination at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. Other work experience includes health information management and coding. Neil brings an analytical perspective to the compliance program and now serves as Compliance Manager for PDC.

Neil is a Fellow of ACHE (FACHE) since January of 2013 and is a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) since 1995. He received both his Bachelor of Science and Master in Health Administration from the Medical University of South Carolina.

Neil is also a member of the American Health Information Management Association and has served as Coastal Region Director of the state chapter of AHIMA.

TREASURER

William Holding, MHA

Will is experienced in developing strategies for business development, performance improvement, and analytics for healthcare providers. At PDA, a Raleigh-based consulting firm, Will conducts health services research and market development which includes market analysis and selection, regulatory and reform environment education, business planning, and certificate of need preparation.

Examples of this work include selecting markets and designing programs for national post-acute providers; completing CONs for hospitals, nursing homes, and physicians groups; and partnering with academic organizations to conduct research projects. In previous roles as a management consultant, he led engagements which brought cost savings and operational improvements to hospitals. He has also established quality improvement processes for physician groups and ACOs, including quality measurement, reporting, compensation, and meaningful use program management. His experience is diverse, but his interest has always been finding efficient ways for providers to meet growing regulatory demands, survive payment reforms, and meet the needs of communities in which they serve.

SECRETARY

Kate Mekeel, MHA

Kate Mekeel is currently the Director of Operations for Learning Services, an organization providing post-acute neuro-rehabilitation services. As the Director of Operations, Kate is responsible for leading the health care providers, quality assurance, finance, and daily operations for the Raleigh, NC program.

Kate began her career as an Administrative Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and progressed to the Director of Ancillary services for UPMC Passavant Hospital. At UPMC Passavant, Kate was responsible for Laboratory Services, Environmental Services, Environmental Health & Safety, and Marketing & Community Relations. In this role, Kate was awarded a grant from the Beckwith Institute and served as the Surgical Services and Cardiovascular intensive Care Unit TeamSTEPPS liaison and trainer.

Kate earned her Masters in Health Administration degree from the University of Pittsburgh and completed her Bachelors of Science in Public Health from Syracuse University.

Outside of work, Kate served on the Western Pennsylvania ACHE board and volunteered for the Big Brother Big Sister organization. Recently moving to the area, Kate is interested in becoming involved in the THIEF ACHE Chapter and joining a new volunteer group.

EDUCATION CHAIRS

Simeon Furman, MHSA

Simeon Furman is the assistant director for the Health Sector Management Certificate Program at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, and the team lead for the executive and working professionals program. He works with MBA candidates, faculty, and leadership on behalf of Fuqua’s health sector management education program. Simeon’s role at Fuqua engages stakeholders, alumni, health sector industry and thought leaders. Simeon has more than a decade of experience in university development and programming before moving into health care. He was a regional development officer with The University of Chicago Booth School of Business, director of alumni affairs for the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, and development coordinator with the Duke Center for Human Genetics. Prior to joining Fuqua, Simeon completed an administrative residency at the Elliot Health System in Manchester, NH. He brings a broad understanding of the health sector, from healthcare delivery systems to translational research.

Simeon holds an MHSA from George Washington University, an MA from Bowling Green State University, and a BS from SUNY College at Buffalo. He has lived throughout the United States and currently resides in Durham, NC.

Heather Jacobson, MHA, MS, CCC/SLP

Heather Jacobson is a Quality Reporting Consultant for Duke Health Private Diagnostic Clinic, PLLC, the multi-specialty faculty practice for Duke. She manages the ambulatory Meaningful Use program, responsible for over 1,200 eligible providers. Prior to coming to Duke, Heather worked as a speech language pathologist, spending over 8 years providing interdisciplinary care across a variety of healthcare settings.

Heather received both her Master in Health Administration and MS in Speech Language Pathology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her BA in Speech and Hearing Science from The Ohio State University. In addition to volunteering as a THEF board member, Heather also volunteers as a Fleet Feet running program training mentor for distances ranging from 5K to full marathon. With many half marathons already under her belt, she completed her first full marathon, the Marine Corps Marathon, in October 2015.

Frank J. Manole, DNP, MSN, MBA, ACNP-BC

Frank Manole has worked in healthcare for over 20 years, both in clinical and leadership roles. He joined WakeMed in 2012 after relocating from New Jersey as a Nurse Practitioner and Education Coordinator for an inpatient Cardiology Advanced Practice Provider program of over 50 providers. Additionally, he serves as the Chair for the Advanced Practice Provider Leadership Council at WakeMed, which represents almost 500 Advanced Practice Providers. He has served as Adjunct Faculty at Rutgers University School of Nursing and UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing, as well as content expert for the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Frank graduated with his BSN from Ramapo College in New Jersey. He has his MSN and DNP from Rutgers University, and has recently completed his MBA from UNC-Chapel Hill with a focus on Strategy and Leadership. Frank currently works within the Structural Heart Program where he has both clinical and operational responsibilities.

Frank has been a member and Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, where he formerly served as the Chair for the Nominations Committee. His prior experience includes process improvement, program development, and physician engagement. He is an active member of multiple local community services, and enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. He has presented both regionally and nationally on topics related to Cardiology and Advanced Practice Provider utilization.

MEMBERSHIP & VOLUNTEER CHAIR

Erika Blackston, MBA, MS, CCS-P

Erika received her MBA from East Carolina University and Bachelors in Biology from the University of Delaware. Erika is also a Certified Coding Specialist-Physician Based through AHIMA.

Erika has been in various roles over the past 7 years at Duke including operation and revenue cycle positions. Erika is currently the Revenue Manager for the Department of Orthopaedic and Department of Physical and Occupational therapy at Duke Medicine. Prior to coming to Duke, Erika work a few healthcare organizations in the North East including Genesis HealthCare and Catholic health East.

Erika is the Treasurer for the North Carolina Chapter of the National Association of Health Service Executives (NAHSE) and volunteers with the Boys and Girls Club of Wake County.

FELLOWSHIP ADVANCEMENT CHAIR

Swati Bhardwaj, MHA, FACHE

Swati Bhardwaj joined SAHA in August 2007 as a Project Manager and currently serves as the Director of Operations for SAHA. In this role, Swati provides day to day oversight and support for SAHA staff while serving as a networking liaison for SAHA members. Her role revolves around developing strategic partnerships to facilitate cost savings, enhance quality and coordinate networking opportunities between various healthcare entities.

Swati has an M.H.A from The Ohio State University and also a Master’s degree in Microbiology. Her previous work experience includes working as a consultant on various process and quality improvement initiatives in a variety of healthcare settings. She has worked extensively on projects related to patient satisfaction and outcomes improvement. In addition to this she also ran the registration department at a community hospital and was closely involved with the business office operations.

Swati is a certified Master trainer for TeamSTEPPS and has a Green Belt certification in Lean Training. She is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), the Triangle Healthcare Executives Forum of North Carolina (THEF) as well as the National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ). Swati also serves on the Board of the North Carolina Association for Healthcare Quality (NCAHQ).

Swati is also a member of the North Carolina HFMA and was recently credentialed as a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE), a professional certification sponsored by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).

COMMUNICATIONS CHAIRS

Joyce Tucker Harper, MBA

Joyce Tucker Harper is the Administrative Officer at Southeastern Healthcare of North Carolina, Inc. In this role, Joyce is responsible for the managing the day-to-day operations while ensuring the highest levels of client satisfaction and overall fiscal and regulatory excellence. Prior to taking this position, Joyce was the President and CEO of Sharper Solutions, LLC a consulting firm specializing in organizational development and strategic planning. A strong leader with executive management experience across a wide spectrum of business operations, Joyce specializes in business turnaround and strategic growth and has restructured several fledging businesses – leading them to unprecedented success. Joyce has been an executive level leader for more than 20 years. She received her MBA from UNC Kenan Flagler Business School Executive MBA Program at Chapel Hill and her BBA from Baruch College/CUNY Zicklin School of Business in New York City.

Heather Bogan, MBA, MPM, PMP

Heather Bogan brings almost twenty years of experience in consulting and project management in the health care industry. She has experience working with health plans, integrated delivery systems, provider organizations, health care IT firms, and academic medical centers.

As a senior member of VHA’s Performance Services team, Heather Bogan provides strategic counsel and direction to members seeking to optimize the health care value equation, improving outcomes while decreasing costs. For larger engagements with members, Heather adds value by overseeing the engagement, serving as a key liaison between clients with desired deliverables and the VHA project team. As the head of the practice’s Project Management Office, she is responsible for overall performance monitoring of the practice’s project portfolio. Heather received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. She completed her MBA at the University of Georgia in Athens and earned her Masters in Project Management degree from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC. She is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and a member of the Project Management Institute as well as a certified Six Sigma Black Belt by the American Society for Quality.

Maryanne Volkringer, MBA

Maryanne Volkringer brings over 15 years of experience in healthcare business development and operations.  Her experience includes strategic planning, new service line development, ambulatory operations, sales and community outreach within acute care, post-acute care and physician practice settings.Maryanne is currently an independent health care consultant with a focus on health care business development, strategic planning and physician alignment. Prior to relocating to North Carolina, Maryanne held the role of Regional Vice President for Business Development at Hartford HealthCare, an integrated health care system based in Connecticut. While at Hartford HealthCare, she was responsible for business development, physician alignment, ambulatory strategic planning and regional ambulatory operations with accountability for imaging and laboratory services.

Maryanne received her MBA and BS in Business Administration degrees from Western New England University in Springfield, Massachusetts. She has held board positions with tax exempt organizations representing home care, rehabilitation, digestive health and physician practice management, as well as with chapters of the YMCA and United Way.
